Floating

15.9 - 08.10.2023

With: Loes Heebink, Priscila Fernandes, Bouke Groen, Rory Pilgrim, Anne Fie Salverda, Gejan Stol, and Edward Clydesdale Thomson.

This exhibition took place in what once was the zuivelfabriek in Kolderveen, where cheeses would float during the brining process. Flotation baths are about separation. Whether separation of the cheese from the air or separating a body from the environment in order to focus the senses, it’s always about reducing one thing so that something else might flourish.

To float is a moment to stop, to contemplate. You’re necessarily idle while you float, separated from the fast pace of the world around, and like floating, art can engender a moment of separation, a moment to surrender to reflection, joy and experience things differently.

But to float is also not to have agency, not to have influence and effect. Not to touch the sides, not to matter. But art matters because it can represent change. And by making change visible, a tangible alternative is offered.

The exhibition presents proposals from several artists working in the vicinity of Kunstwerk Kolderveen that are engaged with this vision. Art is a public sphere and a political space which gives shape and perspective in our world. Art does not exist in a vacuum, it is a living breathing ecosystem in a dynamic relationship with the environment.
